Sworn translation vs. standard translation

From time to time, you may be asked to deliver a sworn translation of a document. It usually regards official correspondence, such as administrative and court letters, birth, marriage or death certificates, foreign employment records, etc. You may wonder whether a sworn translation is different from a standard translation – we will help you find the answer.

Common features of sworn translation and standard services

All translations should be completed by a qualified linguist, ideally a native speaker of a target language. Such educational background is a guarantee that the source text is understood thoroughly and the resulting translation is as close to the original meaning-wise as possible. There are no limits when it comes to the topics covered by sworn or standard translations – the choice solely depends on customer needs.

Differences between the two services

The main difference is the responsibility of the translator. If the customer suffers some losses because of an error in a sworn translation, they may ask the translator for a compensation. This does not happen with standard services. This responsibility is related to the fact that a sworn translation retains its legal relevance; in simple terms, it is seen as an equally important counterpart. Sworn translation is always printed out and stamped – it is the binding and proper form. The rates are also higher due to the responsibility borne by the translator.

How to become a sworn translator

There are several requirements that have to be met in order to obtain this qualification. A person has to hold a Master’s degree as well as an advanced command of one’s native and second language. European/EFTA citizenship and a clean criminal record are also on the list. Finally, the candidate has to pass a very demanding written and oral exam. After fulfilling the above, the linguist is sworn in and may officially start providing sworn translation services.

It is believed that gaining the title of a sworn translator is a great prestige. We completely agree – the examination may be passed only by those with high language skills and broad knowledge. It is our grand pleasure and pride that our team member, Agata Tychoniec, has just passed the exam and will soon be sworn-in.
