Single’s Day in China

November 11th is not only Rememberance or Veterans Day. On this day China celebrates Single’s Day, a sort of anti-Valentine’s Day. The choice of date is not coincidental – four singles (11.11) to represent four lonely people.

Single’s Day was created by several students in the 90’s as a joke, however, as for today it is the most important commercial holiday in China. In contrast to Valentine’s Day , when when we lavish gifts on our beloved ones, November 11th purpose is to celebrate yourself by a shoping frenzy.

That day, online shopping portals offer up to 70% discounts on their products every year breaking sales records . In 2014, in just 24 hours e-commerce vendors sold products for over 9 bilion dollars!

They must really love themselves!
